What are we doing here?

This blog is all about exploring the food and dining habits of the past. From the Middle Ages through to the Victorian Era, from the Far East to the British Empire I love reading about and trying to recreate some of the foods that people have eaten in the past. I find it fascinating how much our eating has changed over the centuries and also seeing the thread that ties our culinary history together.

In this blog I want to examine the extant recipe collections that are available to us and try to reclaim some of these recipes for a modern kitchen. I also want to look beyond the kitchen to the dining table to gain an understanding of what made a meal in different times and places. A meal is more than just individual dishes; each culture has a rhythm to a meal and to understand that rhythm is to take a peek in to a different world.

I hope you will come and join me for an adventure in food history.
